November 2023
In the November issue of Geographical, we take a look at one of the booming sectors of the ever-growing travel industry: wildlife tourism. Everyone, it seems, wants to swim with dolphins, see a lion hunt or even ride an elephant. However, the burgeoning demand, coupled with sometimes lax regulation and unscrupulous operators, can result in some shocking abuses. Over the next year, we plan to return to the subject of tourism, particularly to highlight the best practices found in an ever-growing band of responsible operators.
Also in this month’s issue: Tommy Trenchard’s visit to the small South African village of Witrandjie reveals the devastation caused by a growing demand for chrome ore; Rocco Rorandelli’s photography offers a glimpse into the deadly world of tobacco production; and Mark Rowe reports on the challenge of feeding a growing global population.
